Site Help

Requirements

The AuSIS web page will function on any recent major browser such as IE 9 and above, Firefox 23 and above, Safari 7 and above.

Ensure that you have javascript turned on. It's usually on by default, so you should only have to worry about this if you've turned it off.

Common features

All AuSIS pages contain the AuSIS banner image and menus. Use the menus to navigate to the page you want, or to explore the site.

At the footer of each page is your current local and UTC time for easy reference. Next to the time the image log in is linked to a login page. Site administrators are the only people who need to login.

Plots

Three different plots can be generated from within the AuSIS website. All plots can be copied, as you would other images on a web page: drag and drop, or select and copy, depending on your preference and system.

A 24 hour 'helicorder' plot can be generated either directly from the Day plots page, or from links on the Recent earthquakes page. You can select the station, year, month, day and hour at which the plot commences, and the level of zoom (either '+', '=', or '-'). Plots are taken from data drawn from the USGS site, which can take about 30 seconds to load.

An 'event' plot is produced from the 'Plot' button on the Recent earthquakes page. Multiple stations can be selected, allowing comparison of the recorded data over distance from the event.

Plots from 'archive' data are available from the archive page. You can select multiple stations, and the month, day, hour, minute the plot is to commence, and the duration of the plot interval.

Recent earthquakes

You can specify how many events to view, and over what period. The list of events can be ordered by date (default) or magnitude by clicking on the relevant column heading.

An event is selected by clicking on the event in the map, or on the event in the list. The distance (in degrees) from the event to each AuSIS station is shown next to the station in the table of stations.

To create an event plot, select one event, and one or more stations, then click the 'Plot' button.

To report an event, select one event, and your station, then click the 'Caught it? Report it?' button. You'll be taken to your station's individual page, where you can view all your reports.

View stations

You can view all the stations in the AuSIS network from the stations page. The list of stations can be ordered by station id, or grouped by state. Click on the school name to go to that station's individual page.

The map of Australia shows the location of all stations, and the location of any recent quakes detected by Geosciences Australia.

From the table of stations, you can select plot for a day plot of the last 24 hours from a station, and hover over or select (click on) a station id to highlight its location on the map.

Double click on a recent event to see more information, and to access a link to information on the event on the GA website. You can also access a link to plot that event with data from selected stations.

Reported events

You can view all events reported by stations on the Reported events page. See above for how to report an event.

You can choose the time window of reported events to show. You will see a list of reports, a map of the reported events, and a table of reporting stations for the nominated period.

If you hover over a report, and event, or a station, the associated report, event, and station will be highlighted. Similarly, if you click on a report, an event, or a station, all the reports, events, and stations associated with that report will be selected. For example, selecting a station which has reported two events will select both events, and both reports.

You can create a plot with the data of a selected event from all reporting stations by clicking the 'Plot selected event from reporting stations' button. You must have exactly one event selected for this plot.

Station individual page

Each station has an individual page. Access to the page is via the list of stations on the View stations page.

The page features the location of the site, and if supplied, a representative photo. Also listed are the event reports made by the station. See above for how to report an event. Reports from all stations can be viewed on the Reported events page.

If your school has provided information about your school for display on the site, this will also be shown here.
